DFI - Session Three

We started today with looking at create. The main points I took away from Dorothy were that for creativity to be successful you need to hook the learners in. This means giving them something to do rather than something to learn as this is where most learning naturally happens.

"Creators of content, not merely consumers" (Pt England School)

Next, we explored YouTube and how to set up a channel and playlist. I use YouTube as a tool to support my teaching. I am really looking forward to saving the videos we watch daily to a playlist that I can share with my students.

Google Drawing is something I have never really explored. I can now see that it is going to be very beneficial for making my class site easy to use. I loved all the features that it has to offer and I will defiantly be exploring Google Drawings more. Here is a drawing I made today.

Finally we looked at Google Slides. One thing to remember when making a presentation is use consistent formatting, this then won't take the audience away from what you are saying. I am going to explore more with Google Slides and see how this can help my planning. A tip from Mark was using audio recordings within my learn, create, shares. I have year 1 students so this will be really helpful for them. I am going to try this out next week!
Here is my Digital Pepeha that I made on Google Slides.

What have you read that you might want to learn more about from me?

  1. HI Katie, Great post! It is great to see that you can see such value in what you are learning at DFI. Love the pepeha. Love that you are thinking of ways that your students can be creators rather than consumers! Am looking forward to seeing how this pans out in Kākano.

  2. Kia ora Katie,

Thank you for sharing your reflections and learning from the day. It was really great to read about your thoughts around the pedagogy of create. That is a powerful quote you have used to highlight the importance of creating. I think it is easy to spot children who have only been given devices to consume content rather than use it creatively, would you agree?

What a great profile picture. I love the information you have included. I learnt something about you when I read it. I also enjoyed looking through your pepeha. Do you think you would have a go adding sound to your slides?

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with in your hub and in the next blog post.
    :) Sharon

  3. Kia ora Katie,

A powerful post that has got me thinking. I would love to have a discussion on Friday to unpack a question I have around learning through play. How do you ensure the learning through play activities encourage students to be creators not just consumers? Does it matter?

Pepeha's are so powerful and I made some new connections with you from looking at yours.

I am happy to support you in adding audio to sites and slides as there are a couple of tips and tricks to improve workflow and speed of putting sound on slides and sites.

    Nga mihi,
    Mark
